The Pre-Finishing & Coating Process
The pre-finishing process of the Peruvian and Brazilian hardwood at our North Carolina location starts with the wood going through the sander to be calibrated for thickness and for finishing preparation. This preparation includes bottom and top sanding. Once complete, the finishing process then begins.
Stewartfloor® uses proprietary finishes developed with Treffert Coatings, but NO stains whatsoever. Through a step by step process from primers to prepare the flooring to be finished, the hardwood then enters an oven and ultraviolet (UV) light system to cure the primer. The denibber (brushes) then clean the surface to prepare for the filler to be applied, which fills the pores or open grain of the wood. Our exclusive Atelier matte finish would exclude this filling as it is an open pore finish.
Next, a stainless steel wiping roll cleans the finishing materials up and smoothes them out. The most open grained South American hardwoods will enter a second filler machine to be cured by UV light and brushed for smoothness. A sealer is then applied in addition to aluminum oxide for a durable finish.
The next machine applies a sanding sealer to the hardwood, which is smoothed out by another denibber machine. A top coat of surface material is then applied to the finish and dictates the gloss level: high, medium or low. Additional aluminum oxide is added to prevent sheen from fading and help provide scratch resistance. A final application is applied and cured by four UV lights.
The end result? The finest prefinished Brazilian hardwood flooring in North Carolina…and the world. All in all, the hardwood flooring spends 8 minutes on the finish line before being graded and packed in stewartfloor® boxes with foam between the layers for protection during the shipping process from North Carolina to wherever you are located.
