General Description: Santos Mahogany is a dark mahogany colored wood that is very dense and extremely stable. It has excellent color fastness and is an excellent choice for flooring.
Distribution: Brazil, Panama, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, Guatemala
Color Range: Santos Mahogany exhibits light orangey tones to dark reddish tones. Most of the wood exhibits the medium tones.
Color Change: Slight color change and muting occurs over time further blending the coloring of this floor.
Where To Use: Santos Mahogany may be used residentially or commercially wherever an elegant and sophisticated mahogany color is desired.
Species Characteristics & Issues: Santos Mahogany, depending on country of origin, exhibits a strong aromatic scent; this will dissipate quickly. This scent has been known to cause adverse respiratory reactions in some individuals. Long sleeves and a mask are recommended when exposing oneself to dust from this species. It should be noted that all wood dust has been found to have negative implications over time when breathed into the respiratory system.
Site Sanding/Finishing: Water-base and oil-base finishes work well on Santos. Santos Mahogany does contain a natural oil which when flooring is stored in a hot climate prior to installation can bleed out of the fibers. This does not cause any adverse reactions to the finish.
